Editor's Note: Meet local photographer Samuel Tan, a.k.a. @shoyo_stlb from Twitter. I got to know Samuel at this year's BRIDEX and have been bumping into him at events. As you will read, Samuel is part of a growing segment of Bruneians who have left their 9 to 5 jobs in pursuit of a hobby turned passion. His responses are honest and transparent, and his creative portfolio has just begun. Check out his website - www.SamuelTanPhotography.com or if you are keen to engage him, connect through his Facebook page.
Here's Samuel.
What do you do?
I am currently working as a full time professional photographer on my own. I am still really new to this game…only started in June 2011. My office? My cozy room XD
Describe yourself in a few words.
I am an introvert with an Otter and Golden Retriever cross type of personality. In another words I am a pretty reserved, quiet and I do not usually speak unless it is necessary; I am pretty easy going person.
What inspired you to take up photography?
I have always loved taking photographs. When I was younger I did not have a camera with me so it was an on and off thing. I got serious about it at the end of 2008 and I got my first DSLR in July 2009. From then on there was no turning back. My dad was my inspiration. There is a portrait photograph he took of my mum when they were younger (he was not a professional photographer) which still inspires me!

Name three photographers who inspire you.
Internationally, Michael Greenberg, Chase Jarvis, and Jerry Ghionis (plus a whole lot more!); locally, Jan Shim, Jason Ong and David Cheok.
What was the first camera you ever used, and what are you currently using?
I cannot remember the model, but it was a fully automatic Koday pns film camera circa 1992. The Canon EOS 7D and 30D are my current workhorses.
Did you do a course of some sort?
Officially, I joined a photography club back then (1992) and at the beginning of this year I went to Kuala Lumpur to attend a photography seminar and workshop by Creative Asia. However, most of my camera knowledge is from the Internet, photography blogs, articles, videos and forums plus a lot of practice, practice and practice. The Internet has exposed a new way of learning provided you know what to look for.
Why do you enjoy photography?
The one most important aspect of photography to me is that you get to convert moments into lasting memories. Looking back at old photographs after years can bring you back to those very moments. I find this astonishing and valuable.

What are your favourite photography assignments?
People; candid moments during weddings, parties, etc where people are happy and active. The world is filled with enough sad news that I much rather people realize good things, that love for one another still exists and is going strong. Landscape and nature photography is my second. The beauty of creation by God is just marvelous and inspiring.
What has been your favorite photography shoot thus far and why?
I am still waiting for it and doubt that I will ever have one. This mentality helps me continually improve my craft.
What has been the highlight of your journey so far?
The decision to step away from my 9 to 5 job to become a full time photographer. It was not an easy decision and it took me more than 6 months to make the jump. I am gladly grateful that my family and relatives have been supportive of my decision.

Complete this sentence "In three years, I..."
In three years, I aim to be a photographer known both locally and internationally. Winning an international photography competition is also one of my goals. Hopefully I can be an inspiration for others to passionately go for their dream to achieve their best instead of being mediocre.
